ORTHODONTICS
(Braces and aligners)

What is Orthodontics?

Orthodontics is a specialized area of dentistry focused on correcting misaligned teeth and jaws. The goal of orthodontic treatment is to improve the appearance, function, and health of your smile by gently guiding teeth into proper alignment over time. Straight teeth are not just about aesthetics—they also contribute to better oral hygiene, improved bite function, and long-term dental health.

Why do I need Braces or Aligners?

You may need orthodontic treatment if you have crooked teeth, crowded teeth, gaps, an overbite, underbite, crossbite, or jaw misalignment. These issues can make brushing and flossing more difficult, increasing the risk of cavities, gum disease, and tooth wear. Orthodontics can also help relieve jaw pain, improve speech, and boost confidence by creating a healthier, more balanced smile.

Types of Orthodontics at Lakemoor Dental

Modern orthodontics offers several treatment options to fit different lifestyles and needs. At Lakemoor Dental, we provide personalized orthodontic care using advanced technology to ensure comfortable and effective results.

Traditional Braces
Metal braces are a reliable and effective option for correcting complex alignment and bite issues. Today’s braces are smaller, more comfortable, and more efficient than ever before.

Clear Braces
Clear braces function like traditional braces but use tooth-colored or clear brackets, making them less noticeable. They are a popular choice for teens and adults who want a more discreet option.

Clear Aligners
Clear aligners are removable, nearly invisible trays that gradually straighten teeth. They are comfortable, convenient, and ideal for patients looking for a flexible orthodontic solution without brackets or wires.

What makes an Orthodontist different from a General Dentist?

An orthodontist is a dentist who has completed 2–3 years of additional specialized training after dental school focused solely on straightening teeth and correcting bite and jaw alignment. While general dentists provide overall dental care like cleanings and fillings, orthodontists specialize in braces, clear aligners, and complex bite issues. Choosing an orthodontist means your treatment is handled by a specialist with advanced training in tooth movement and long-term smile alignment.

Benefits of Braces

Braces are orthodontic devices designed to straighten teeth and correct misaligned bites. They typically consist of small metal or ceramic brackets attached to your teeth and connected by flexible wires. Braces work by applying gentle, continuous pressure over time—usually 6 to 30 months—to gradually move teeth into their ideal positions. After braces are removed, many patients wear a removable retainer to maintain proper alignment and ensure long-lasting results.

Why Do People Need Braces?

Braces are not just for improving the appearance of your smile. Crooked teeth and misaligned bites can cause speech difficulties, increased risk of tooth decay, gum disease, and even long-term jaw problems. Correcting bite and alignment issues with braces improves oral health, makes cleaning easier, and supports overall dental wellness.

Orthodontic Care for Children

Early orthodontic check-ups are essential as your child’s adult teeth begin to come in. Addressing alignment and bite issues early can simplify treatment, prevent more complex problems later, and set your child on the path to a healthy, confident smile.

Living with Braces

Adjusting to braces is easier than you might think! While you may need to modify brushing and flossing habits and avoid sticky or hard foods, the results are well worth it. With proper care, braces will help you achieve a straight, healthy smile that lasts a lifetime.
